Christiane Amanpour Announces Return of Ovarian Cancer
Christiane Amanpour, the renowned journalist and CNN chief international anchor, has announced her battle with ovarian cancer for the second time. During the podcast episode “Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story,” released on October 23, 2023, the 67-year-old revealed that her condition is being effectively managed.
Christiane Amanpour’s Cancer Journey
Amanpour’s current health struggle follows her initial diagnosis four years ago, when she underwent several months of chemotherapy. She expressed her gratitude for effective management of her condition during the podcast hosted by Hannah Vaughan Jones.
The Silent Nature of Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is often referred to as “the silent killer” due to its late diagnosis. Symptoms can include:
- Abdominal bloating or swelling
- Feeling full quickly when eating
- Weight loss
- Frequent urination
- Changes in bowel habits
- Pelvic discomfort
Dr. Angela Georg, Amanpour’s oncologist, emphasized that this particular type of ovarian cancer is relatively rare. Amanpour recalled her initial fears and uncertainty upon receiving the diagnosis, stating, “I didn’t know how long I’d had it.”
Understanding Ovarian Cancer Statistics
According to the National Cancer Institute, ovarian cancer accounted for about 2% of all cancer-related deaths in 2025, with a five-year relative survival rate of 52%. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that this disease results in more deaths than any other cancer affecting the female reproductive system.
Furthermore, a 2018 study revealed that the average lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer is estimated at 1.3%, or 1 in 78 for individuals with a female reproductive system.
Amanpour’s Advocacy
In 2021, Amanpour made the decision to publicly share her cancer journey. She aimed to support others facing similar challenges. “I wanted to say listen to your body because part of the reason I got such quick care was because I listened to my body and went straight to the doctors,” she mentioned.
Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of awareness and early detection in managing ovarian cancer effectively.
