Sia’s Divorce Sparks Custody Battle Amid Drug Use Allegations
In a high-profile divorce case, pop star Sia and her estranged husband, Daniel Bernad, are embroiled in a contentious custody battle over their 19-month-old son, Somersault, often referred to as “Summi.” The situation has escalated with serious allegations, including accusations of drug use and possession of child pornography.
Court Developments and Custody Claims
On October 29, Judge Firdaus F. Dordi dismissed Bernad’s urgent request to alter their custody arrangement. The judge indicated that the latest motion lacked new allegations but allowed for the possibility of resubmission in the future.
The divorce proceedings began in March 2023, initiated by Sia due to “irreconcilable differences.” Since then, Bernad, an oncologist, has sought significant spousal support, demanding over $250,000 monthly, with a hearing scheduled for January 2024.
Allegations Against Sia
In his court filing dated October 27, Bernad labeled Sia a drug addict, claiming she is unfit to care for their son. He alleges that she abused substances like ketamine and opioids during their marriage and was found with barbiturates and benzodiazepines after a hospital visit last month. Bernad has requested full custody, asserting he is the more suitable parent free from addiction.
- Bernad’s claims include:
- Sia struggles with substance abuse.
- He wants supervised visits for her with Summi.
- He requests Sia undergo breathalyzer tests and random drug testing.
Sia’s Response and Denials
In response, Sia has stated that she has been sober for over six months and is dedicated to her recovery. She counters that Bernad is the one engaging in recreational drug use, which contributed to the breakdown of their marriage.
Sia’s declaration accuses Bernad of attempting to manipulate her past struggles for his gain, stating, “His willingness to dredge up decades-old history demonstrates the extent to which he will go, even at the expense of our child.”
Previous Investigations
Bernad previously faced scrutiny over alleged child pornography discovered on his hard drive in July. The investigations by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Department of Child and Family Services were closed without any charges due to insufficient evidence. Despite the lack of charges, Sia remains uncomfortable with Bernad having unsupervised access to their child, citing his history of being an absentee parent.
As this case continues to develop, both parties have yet to comment publicly on the latest court ruling. The upcoming hearings in January are expected to further complicate the already fraught relationship between Sia and Bernad.
