Wandsworth Offers Free Grit for Residents Ahead of Cold Snap

Wandsworth residents are set to receive up to 50 kilos of free grit as temperatures are expected to drop this winter. This initiative aims to assist residents in keeping footpaths clear of ice, especially during the cold snap. Last year, the council distributed approximately 20 tonnes of grit to local residents and community groups.

Details of the Grit Distribution

The council will provide free grit at its depot, located in Dormay Street. Residents can collect grit on the following dates:

  • Saturday, 15 November
  • Saturday, 22 November

Collection times are between 9 AM and 12 PM. Residents are required to present proof of address to verify their residency within the borough. For those using GPS devices, the depot’s postcode is SW18 1EY.

Additional Grit Supply Efforts

Wandsworth’s initiative also involves supplying grit to 200 neighbourhood watch coordinators. The council has filled 55 grit bins throughout the borough for immediate access. These bins are particularly important in hilly areas where icy pavements can pose safety risks.

Emergency Response and Priority Areas

When severe weather strikes, the council mobilizes its fleet of gritting vehicles and personnel to manage icy conditions. The main focus is always on:

  • Clearing major roads
  • Ensuring that emergency services can operate efficiently
  • Maintaining access to public transport

Particular emphasis is placed on areas such as:

  • Tube and rail station entrances
  • Hospitals
  • Day centres
  • Care homes and clinics
  • Nurseries

Transport for London manages the gritting of borough red routes, including major roads such as the A3, A24, and A205, among others. For further information about the free grit offer, residents can call 020 8871 6000.
