Student Arrested for Similar Anti-Conservative Incident Before Turning Point Table Flip
A University of Iowa student, Justin Calhoon, has been arrested in connection with two incidents involving the disruption of conservative groups on campus. His first arrest occurred on October 27, when he allegedly flipped a table belonging to the Young America’s Foundation (YAF). Then, just days later, on November 5, he was arrested again for flipping a Turning Point USA table.
Details of the Incidents
The initial disturbance took place on October 27. Calhoon approached the YAF table exhibiting aggressive behavior, according to a criminal complaint. He disrupted their assembly by flipping the table over and reportedly made obscene gestures while shouting profanities.
Charges Filed
As a result of the October 27 incident, Calhoon was arrested on October 31 and charged with:
- Disorderly conduct
- Fifth-degree criminal mischief
- Third-degree harassment
A female member of the YAF expressed her concern for personal safety after the incident, highlighting the threatening atmosphere created by Calhoon’s behavior.
Second Arrest for Anti-Conservative Actions
Following his first arrest, Calhoon was involved in another incident on November 5. He was recorded lunging across a Turning Point USA table, flipping it over and causing promotional materials to spill onto the ground. This act led to further charges, including:
- Two counts of disorderly conduct
- Fifth-degree criminal mischief
- Two counts of third-degree harassment
Witness reports indicated that the group present, primarily female students, felt intimidated and disrupted by his actions.
University Response
The University of Iowa stated that students are required to follow a Code of Student Life, which outlines expected behavior and conduct. The university confirmed its commitment to free speech and mentioned annual First Amendment training for students.
Despite inquiries regarding any disciplinary actions against Calhoon for his aggressive behavior towards both YAF and Turning Point USA, the university maintained that outcomes of such investigations are confidential.
This series of events has raised questions about the environment of free expression and safety at campuses in light of increasing incidences of confrontations related to political groups.
