Pope Leo Advocates Peace, Christian Unity in Turkey and Lebanon Visit
Pope Leo XIV has embarked on his inaugural foreign trip to Turkey and Lebanon, emphasizing peace and Christian unity. This visit coincides with the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, Christianity’s first ecumenical council, which took place in 325 AD. The journey honors the late Pope Francis’ vision of strengthening ties among Christian denominations while addressing pressing geopolitical concerns.
Pope Leo’s Mission in Turkey
The visit to Turkey includes crucial meetings aimed at fostering interfaith dialogue. In Ankara, Pope Leo will meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which marks an important diplomatic step. Following this, the Pope will engage in three days of ecumenical activities in Istanbul.

- Three days of interfaith discussions in Istanbul
- Final leg of the trip will be in Lebanon
Significance of the Council of Nicaea
The Pope’s journey is particularly significant as it commemorates the formation of the Nicene Creed. This foundational statement of faith continues to be recited by millions of Christians around the globe. It underscores the importance of unity among Christian communities.
Lebanon’s Role in the Region
Lebanon has historically served as a symbol of religious tolerance in the Middle East. The Vatican views Lebanon as a bastion for Christians, especially in light of ongoing conflicts that have diminished Christian presence in the region. Pope Leo’s engagement in Lebanon aims to reinforce these values of coexistence and solidarity.
