Money Not a Factor in QB Recruit Landon Duckworth’s South Carolina Choice
Four-star quarterback recruit Landon Duckworth from Jackson, Alabama, is set to join the South Carolina Gamecocks. This decision, anticipated to be finalized this coming Wednesday, follows a careful recruitment process that prioritized comfort over monetary incentives.
Family Guidance and Financial Considerations
Duckworth’s mother, Tiffany Campbell, played a crucial role in his recruitment. She aimed to shield him from financial discussions during his formative years. “I don’t care what nobody says,” Campbell stated. “Kids having access to that type of money is scary.” Her approach limited conversations about NIL deals until Duckworth’s senior year, ensuring he focused on finding the right fit for his college career.
Despite their modest upbringing, Campbell has been able to provide her son with opportunities, running a successful income tax preparation office and two tax services. She advised Duckworth to maintain his current lifestyle, emphasizing that he had previously experienced comfort and should continue to do so.
Recruitment Journey and Commitments
Initially, Duckworth committed to South Carolina back in August 2023, drawn to head coach Shane Beamer and offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. As his high school career progressed, he attracted attention from other major programs, including Texas A&M and Oregon. Ultimately, he decommitted to explore his options further but returned to commit to the Gamecocks in July after a thorough evaluation of various programs.
A Record of Success on the Field
Duckworth arrived at South Carolina as the highest-rated quarterback under Coach Shane Beamer. His impressive football career includes leading Jackson High to a state championship in 4A Alabama football, as well as contributing to two state title wins in basketball and as part of a state-winning 4×100 relay team.
- Completed over 60% of passes for 2,160 yards
- Scored 20 touchdowns, with nine interceptions
- Rushed for nearly 600 yards and 11 touchdowns
He has consistently demonstrated his competitive nature, as noted by his quarterback coach, Davis Morris. Morris, who has trained several NFL quarterbacks, praised Duckworth’s dedication and consistency throughout his training since a young age.
Looking Ahead
Duckworth will enroll at South Carolina in January and may find himself competing for the starting position depending on the return of current quarterback LaNorris Sellers. His longstanding commitment to the Gamecocks, even amid coaching changes, underscores the strong relationship he has developed with the program.
For Duckworth, the decision to choose South Carolina wasn’t swayed by financial offers but rather by a genuine connection to the team and its staff. As Campbell noted, “Landon was never looking at money.” This focus on personal fit hints at a promising future for the young athlete in college football.
