Chris Pratt Leads Saint Peter Tomb Documentary by AF Films and Vatican Media

The tomb of Saint Peter, located within the Vatican Necropolis, is set to be featured in a groundbreaking documentary led by actor Chris Pratt. This project marks the first time the hidden tomb will be filmed for a documentary audience. Currently in production, the filming is taking place in St. Peter’s Basilica and the surrounding necropolis, which lies beneath Vatican City.

Collaboration and Production Details

The documentary, which currently does not have an official title, is a collaborative effort involving Vatican Media, the Fabbrica di San Pietro, and Spain’s AF Films. Frank Ariza and Manu Vega of AF Films are producing the project, while the Spanish director Paula Ortiz is at the helm. The screenplay is crafted by Andrea Tornielli, with insights from Vatican expert Pietro Zande.

An anticipated release is set for 2026, coinciding with the 400th anniversary of the St. Peter’s Basilica’s inauguration, which occurred on November 18, 1626. In a statement, Pratt expressed his honor in partnering with Pope Leo and the Vatican for this significant project. He emphasized the foundational importance of Saint Peter’s story in the Christian faith and his appreciation for the access granted to portray the Apostle’s legacy.

Historical Context

The Basilica’s history is deeply connected to the life of Saint Peter, the fisherman from Galilee. Believed to have been martyred on Vatican Hill in 64 AD, Peter’s burial site rapidly became a focal point for early Christians, many of whom desired to be interred near him.

Documentary Synopsis

According to the documentary’s synopsis, viewers will embark on an engaging journey through time, uncovering thrilling insights about Saint Peter’s tomb. It will include exclusive images and highlight historical events, including Emperor Constantine’s efforts to preserve the burial site by leveling Vatican Hill to construct the original large Basilica.

The narrative will delve into the historical and archaeological evidence leading to the identification of the Apostle’s grave in the Vatican Necropolis. This identification was officially announced in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, who initiated the excavations underneath St. Peter’s Basilica. In 1968, Pope Paul VI confirmed that the remains of Saint Peter had been found. He stated, “The relics of Peter have been identified in a way that we can consider convincing.”
