DW: Parts of US Security Plan Deemed ‘Unacceptable’ – 12/09/2025

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz voiced strong opposition to parts of the new US National Security Strategy unveiled recently. He described several components as “unacceptable from a European perspective.” Merz emphasized that Europe must reduce its dependence on the United States, addressing Washington’s changing approach to foreign policy.

Merz’s Critique of the US National Security Strategy

During a visit to Rhineland-Palatinate, Merz stated that the strategy echoed previous remarks by US Vice President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference. He noted, “Some of it is plausible, some of it is understandable, and some of it is unacceptable for us from a European point of view.”

  • Merz criticized the US stance on European democracy, saying, “If it needed saving, we would be able to handle that on our own.”
  • He argued that the US assessment of European political realities is flawed.

Shifts in US and European Relations

Merz remarked that the US shift has confirmed his belief that Europe, and Germany in particular, must pursue greater independence in security matters. He addressed the US saying, “‘America first’ is fine, but ‘America alone’ cannot be in your interest.” He stressed the importance of partnership and collaboration, asserting that Europe can be a valuable partner to the US.

Stressing a shared commitment, Merz noted the mutual goals of preserving freedom, security, and peace across Europe. He urged the US to recognize the necessity of this cooperation for its own interests.

Overview of the New National Security Strategy

The National Security Strategy outlines President Trump’s foreign policy as centered around “flexible realism.” It expresses a pessimistic view of Europe and warns about “civilizational erasure.” Key elements of the strategy include:

  • Addressing the Ukraine conflict to restore stability.
  • Reviving the “Monroe Doctrine” to assert US influence in the Western Hemisphere.
  • Focusing on countering China’s economic presence in Latin America.
  • Strengthening military power to deter conflict with China in Asia.

This strategy reflects a broad vision for US foreign relations, prioritizing security and stability both regionally and globally.
