Canada Announces 27-Player Junior Camp Roster, Headlined by NHL Prospect Gavin McKenna

Hockey Canada has unveiled a 27-player roster for its junior training camp, set to prepare for the 2026 World Junior Championship in Minnesota. This lineup, featuring NHL prospect Gavin McKenna, aims to cultivate teamwork rather than simply showcase individual talent.

Highlights of the Junior Camp Roster

Among the six returning players from last year’s fifth-place finish are noteworthy talents such as Cole Beaudoin, Carter George, Jack Ivankovic, Jett Luchanko, and Porter Martone. General manager Allan Millar emphasized the strategy behind team preparation.

Key Objectives for the Team

  • The focus is on building a cohesive unit rather than an all-star ensemble.
  • Millar stated, “Winning at the World Junior Championship is challenging; it requires specific player traits.”
  • Consistency in teamwork is crucial during tough matches.

The camp roster also includes six players with previous NHL experience: Harrison Brunicke, Braeden Cootes, Jett Luchanko, Brady Martin, Michael Misa, and Zayne Parekh. These experienced players are expected to contribute significantly to the team’s overall dynamics.

Gavin McKenna: A Rising Star

Featured prominently in the roster is Gavin McKenna, hailing from Whitehorse, Yukon, and currently a freshman at Penn State. Projected as a potential first overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft, McKenna’s progress in the NCAA is closely watched, potentially influencing future draft strategies.

Originally, Hockey Canada planned to invite 24 players, but injuries and exceptional performances led to an expanded list of 27. A forward, defenseman, and goalie will be cut from the camp by December 22.

Training Camp Details

Canada’s training camp is scheduled for December 12-22 at Gale Centre Arena in Niagara Falls, Ontario, leading up to pre-tournament games against Sweden and Denmark. The team’s opening match against Czechia is set for December 26 at the 3M Arena in Minneapolis.

Building a Winning Culture

Mark Hunter, the under-20 lead for Hockey Canada’s program management, highlighted the importance of humility and collective success. “The focus must be on team play; it’s essential for winning games,” he stated.

Dale Hunter, coach of the London Knights, will lead the team during this training phase. He aims to solidify a strategy emphasizing teamwork and effective systems.
