Historic Preservation Group Sues White House Over Ballroom Plans

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has initiated legal action against the White House regarding the construction of a new ballroom. The nonprofit organization, which the US Congress established to safeguard historic sites, filed the lawsuit on Friday, arguing that the White House neglected necessary review processes before demolishing the historic East Wing last October.

Key Arguments of the Lawsuit

The lawsuit claims that no president, whether Donald Trump or Joe Biden, is permitted to make significant alterations to the White House without proper reviews. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has requested that a federal court in Washington, D.C., halt construction on the ballroom until the White House adheres to legal review processes.

  • The organization emphasizes the importance of a public comment period.
  • The construction allegedly began without filing plans with the National Capital Planning Commission.
  • No environmental assessment was conducted prior to the start of construction.
  • The lawsuit contends that Trump is violating the U.S. Constitution regarding property management.

Concerns Raised by the Organization

Carol Quillen, President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, described the White House as a significant symbol of American ideals. She stated that the organization felt “compelled” to pursue legal action due to the White House’s dismissal of their concerns raised in October.

Details of the Ballroom Project

The lawsuit marks the first significant challenge to the ballroom project. The White House maintains that the addition is a “much-needed and exquisite” enhancement. The East Wing was demolished to accommodate the ballroom, which was originally designed to hold 500 guests but has since increased to a capacity of 1,350.

Despite prior assurances that the project would undergo assessment by the National Capital Planning Commission, extensive construction has already commenced. Observations made during site visits note that the area resembles a bustling construction site, featuring heavy machinery and numerous workers. Just last week, a large construction crane was erected on the grounds.

Administration’s Response

In response to the lawsuit, the White House affirmed that President Trump possesses full legal authority to renovate and enhance the residence, akin to actions taken by former presidents. Recently, there was a reported change in the lead architect for the project due to disputes regarding its scale and specifications.
