ID. Polo Nears Production: Bestseller Reinvented for the Road
Volkswagen is set to redefine the automotive landscape with the upcoming ID. Polo, a vehicle marking the start of a new electric generation for the brand. Scheduled to debut in spring 2026, this compact electric model retains the familiar Polo name and aims to provide affordable electric mobility to a broader audience in Europe, starting at an entry-level price of 25,000 euros.
ID. Polo: A Blend of Design and Functionality
The ID. Polo introduces Volkswagen’s latest design language, known as ‘Pure Positive,’ crafted by Head of Design Andreas Mindt. This design approach focuses on intuitive operation, functionality, and superior quality, ensuring the vehicle’s appeal across various customer demographics.
Specifications and Performance
- Power Outputs: Available in three configurations: 85 kW (116 PS), 99 kW (135 PS), and 155 kW (211 PS).
- Sporty Variant: The ID. Polo GTI will launch later in 2026 with 166 kW (226 PS).
- Battery Options:
- 85 kW and 99 kW models feature a 37 kWh LFP battery with DC rapid-charging at up to 90 kW.
- 155 kW and 166 kW versions utilize a 52 kWh NMC battery allowing ranges of up to 450 km and charging at 130 kW DC.
Technological Innovations
The ID. Polo is built on an enhanced version of the Modular Electric Drive Matrix, known as MEB+. This innovative platform incorporates a new front-wheel drive system and a highly efficient electric motor, termed APP 290, which collectively reduce complexity and weight. Such advancements contribute to cost efficiency and lower energy consumption.
Battery Technology
The ID. Polo uses PowerCo’s new unified cell technology, which employs cell-to-pack methods. This optimizes battery production by eliminating intermediate module housing, leading to a significant decrease in weight and price while improving energy density by 10%. The end result is greater driving range for the vehicle.
Volkswagen’s commitment to electric mobility will see the launch of six additional electric models by 2026, projecting a bright future for the ID. series. The ID. Polo not only enhances the Volkswagen portfolio but also signifies a pivotal shift toward sustainable transportation solutions.
