Dan Burn Sidelined with Rib Injury at Newcastle United

Newcastle United’s Dan Burn faces a significant recovery period after sustaining a broken rib and punctured lung during a recent match. The injury occurred in a clash with Sunderland’s right-back, Nordi Mukiele, in the first half of the derby on Sunday, which Newcastle lost 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Details of the Injury

During a pivotal moment in the game, Burn and Mukiele both slid in for the ball. Mukiele’s knee struck Burn in the side, leading to the severe injury. Although Burn attempted to continue after receiving treatment, he had to be substituted by Fabian Schar shortly afterward.

Following the match, Newcastle’s head coach, Eddie Howe, revealed that Burn was taken to the hospital due to breathing difficulties at half-time. A punctured lung occurs when air escapes into the chest cavity, causing pressure that can lead to lung collapse.

Impact on the Team

Howe is expected to offer further insights into Burn’s condition during a press conference on Tuesday. It appears the defender will miss several matches during the busy festive schedule and into the new year.

“We’re stretched in our backline,” Howe stated. “We have got a number of injuries and that is alarming for us.” Currently, the club is experiencing a challenging period with multiple defensive injuries.

Other Injuries in the Squad

  • Sven Botman is sidelined due to a back issue.
  • Kieran Trippier is recovering from a hamstring injury.
  • Emil Krafth is out with a knee injury.

Looking Ahead

With Burn sidelined, Schar is anticipated to partner with Malick Thiaw in the upcoming Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, held at St James’ Park. The team’s depth will be tested, as they have limited senior options available to fill the gaps left by injured players.
