The injury occurred in a clash with Sunderland’s right-back, Nordi Mukiele, in the first half of the derby on Sunday, which Newcastle lost 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

During a pivotal moment in the game, Burn and Mukiele both slid in for the ball. Mukiele’s knee struck Burn in the side, leading to the severe injury. Although Burn attempted to continue after receiving treatment, he had to be substituted by Fabian Schar shortly afterward.
Following the match, Newcastle’s head coach, Eddie Howe, revealed that Burn was taken to the hospital due to breathing difficulties at half-time. A punctured lung occurs when air escapes into the chest cavity, causing pressure that can lead to lung collapse.
