Powerful Storm Leaves Thousands Without Power in B.C.

A significant wind and rain storm impacted British Columbia, leaving numerous residents without power and closing schools on Wednesday. This weather event marks the third major outage caused by storms within the week, affecting tens of thousands across the province.

Power Outages Across B.C.

At the height of the storm on Wednesday morning, approximately 120,000 customers were reported to be without electricity, according to B.C. Hydro. By late afternoon, that number decreased to around 30,000. The Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast were hit the hardest, experiencing extensive service interruptions.

Impacts on Education and Community Safety

Several schools suspended operations due to power failures. This included all institutions in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, alongside others in Langley, Abbotsford, Kootenay-Columbia, and Kootenay Lake.

Causes and Response

Kevin Aquino from B.C. Hydro indicated that the prolonged drought over past years has left trees vulnerable to damage during storms. He emphasized that crews are working tirelessly to restore power while ensuring safety.

Weather Warning and Damage Potential

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement warning residents of strong winds. Gusts were expected to reach between 80 km/h and 100 km/h, posing risks of power outages and tree damage. Residents were advised to secure outdoor items and avoid fallen power lines.

Tragedy and Ongoing Recovery

Tragically, a falling tree in Chilliwack resulted in the death of a woman at a local park on Monday. The Fraser Valley is still dealing with the aftermath of recent floods that led to local emergencies, evacuations, and highway closures.

Flooding Update

While parts of Chilliwack remain under flood warnings, the City of Abbotsford has made progress. It downgraded the status of 11 properties from an Evacuation Order to an Evacuation Alert and lifted alerts for nearly 500 properties in Sumas Prairie.

Current Conditions and Safety Advisories

As river levels are expected to rise in various regions across B.C., the River Forecast Centre has advised caution around river banks. No significant flooding is anticipated at this time, but residents are reminded to stay clear of flooded roads and bridges.

Highway Conditions

Highway Status
Highway 3 Closed (60 km stretch southeast of Hope)
Highway 1 Reduced speed limits due to water pooling

This latest storm illustrates the challenges faced by residents in British Columbia amid unpredictable weather patterns. Authorities continue to monitor conditions and provide essential services to those affected.
