Winter Starts Sunday: NYC’s Snowfall Forecast Revealed

As winter approaches, New York City anticipates its first major snowfall this Sunday. Meteorologists are closely analyzing weather patterns to forecast snowfall for the season.

Snow Forecast for NYC

According to Vanessa Murdock, a meteorologist from CBS News New York, insights from weather experts suggest a mixed winter ahead. Nelson Vaz, a warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service, and Dr. Dave Robinson, New Jersey state climatologist at Rutgers University, provide their analyses.

Impact of La Niña

The current weak La Niña phenomenon is projected to influence local snowfall significantly. La Niña occurs when cold water gathers in the eastern equatorial Pacific, which affects weather patterns across the United States.

  • Areas in the northern U.S. and the Great Lakes are likely to experience above-average snowfall.
  • New York, however, may face drier and less snowy conditions.

Robinson noted that last winter, during a similar La Niña phase, Central Park recorded only 12.9 inches of snow. Historically, two-thirds of winters with weak La Niña conditions have resulted in below-normal snowfall for the region.

Seasonal Snowfall Predictions

Forecasts for this season indicate an anticipated total snowfall of 15 to 20 inches in Central Park. This is a significant reduction compared to the 29.8 inches averaged over the past 30 years.

So far this season, just 2.9 inches of snow have fallen and subsequently melted away. Given the current weather indicators, snow lovers might find their expectations unmet this winter.

Though the overall outlook seems subdued, experts caution against completely ruling out the possibility of a substantial snowfall. The right conditions may still bring a memorable storm to New York City.
