Cincinnati football’s 2025 season began with a promising 7-1 record and a ranking of No. 16 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. However, the team faced a late-season setback, losing its final four regular-season games. As a result, they aim to finish the season positively in the Liberty Bowl against Navy on January 1. A victory would secure Cincinnati’s first season with at least eight wins since 2022 and their first bowl win since 2019.

Brendan Sorsby’s Status for Liberty Bowl

Brendan Sorsby, Cincinnati’s starting quarterback, will not participate in the Liberty Bowl. He opted out of the game and plans to enter the transfer portal. This decision comes after he announced on December 15 that he would forgo the bowl game. Importantly, Sorsby is not sidelined due to an injury.

Transfer Portal Details

Sorsby previously transferred to Cincinnati from Indiana after the 2023 season. Standing at 6 feet 3 inches tall, he is recognized as a five-star recruit and is ranked as the top quarterback in the transfer portal, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings as of January 1.

Interest from other schools has already surfaced, with Miami, LSU, and Texas Tech reportedly eyeing Sorsby as he enters the portal on January 2.

Backup Quarterback Situation

With Sorsby’s absence, Cincinnati will rely on backup quarterback Brady Lichtenberg for the Liberty Bowl. This will be Lichtenberg’s first start since 2023, when he played against West Virginia. Throughout the 2025 season, he has participated in two games, completing 4-of-6 passes for a total of 56 yards and one touchdown.

Cincinnati’s offensive coordinator, Brad Glenn, praised Lichtenberg for his preparedness and high football IQ. He emphasized the trust the staff and team have in him as they approach the decisive game against Navy.

Additional Quarterback Insights

  • Samaj Jones is expected to see playing time in the Liberty Bowl.
  • Cincinnati’s goal is to achieve at least eight wins this season.
  • A win would mark Cincinnati’s first bowl victory since 2019.

As the Bearcats prepare for the Liberty Bowl, all eyes will remain on the performance of their backup quarterbacks amidst significant roster changes.
