On January 19, 2026, Temple University will serve as the volunteer hub for the first time in over 15 years. This year’s theme focuses on civil rights through education and equity. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker announced the city’s plans with Todd Bernstein, the event’s founder and director.
Significance of the Event
The MLK Day of Service started in 1996 with just 1,000 volunteers in Philadelphia. Since then, it has expanded to include hundreds of thousands participating nationwide. Bernstein emphasized that this day is more than a celebration; it represents a commitment to continuing Dr. King’s vision of social justice.
Volunteer Opportunities
Participants can take part in various service projects at Temple University, which include:
- Jobs fair
- Health and wellness fair
- Children’s carnival with educational activities
- Workshops on civic engagement
- Reading Captains training for early literacy initiatives
Volunteers will also assemble “book arks” to provide free books in underserved areas and create hygiene kits for individuals experiencing homelessness.
Cultural Celebration
In the afternoon, the Philadelphia Orchestra will host its annual tribute concert at the Kimmel Center’s Marian Anderson Hall. Attendees can reserve free tickets online. Additionally, a food drive, in partnership with Philabundance, will encourage residents to donate non-perishable food items to address food insecurity in the community.
