Health Canada Issues Nationwide Soap Recall Over Chemical Hazard

Health Canada has issued a nationwide recall of soaps from Lake on the Woods Sunrise Soap Co. due to a chemical hazard involving high levels of methyl eugenol. This recall, announced on a Wednesday, affects approximately 400 units of the “Shades of Grey” bar of soap sold across Canada since January 2019. The products in question include various sizes: 16 g, 67 g, and 135 g bars, all manufactured in Kenora, Ontario.

Health Risks Associated with Methyl Eugenol

Methyl eugenol is listed on the Hotlist as a prohibited ingredient due to its potential carcinogenic effects. While it can occur naturally in botanical extracts, there are strict limits based on the product type.

Consumer Safety Recommendations

As of January 7, no incidents or injuries related to the soap have been reported. However, Health Canada urges consumers to take precautionary measures:

  • Cease using the recalled products immediately.
  • Dispose of any affected soap safely.
  • Contact Lake of the Woods Sunrise Soap Co. for a replacement.
