Capitals Inquired About Quinn Hughes, Refused to Trade Cole Hutson

Washington Capitals general manager Chris Patrick recently confirmed the team’s interest in superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes, who was traded from the Vancouver Canucks to the Minnesota Wild on December 12. In this deal, the Canucks received top young defender Zeev Buium, center Marco Rossi, prospect Liam Ohgren, and a 2026 first-round pick.

Capitals’ Decision on Cole Hutson

Despite their interest in Hughes, the Capitals opted not to include their top defensive prospect, Cole Hutson, in potential trade discussions. Patrick emphasized his commitment to Hutson, expressing a desire to see him develop within the team. “I really like Cole Hutson, and I want to see what he can do in a Washington Capitals sweater,” Patrick stated.

Hutson, who was selected in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft, is currently excelling at Boston University with a points-per-game average. He has recorded 21 points (7 goals, 14 assists) in 21 games this season. Additionally, Hutson played for Team USA at the 2026 World Juniors, though his tournament was cut short due to a serious injury.

Patrick’s reluctance to trade Hutson aligns the young defenseman with another untouchable talent, 20-year-old winger Ryan Leonard. Both players are viewed as integral parts of the Capitals’ future.
