Ruben Rodrigues Joins Wanderers as Former Oxford and Notts Playmaker
Bolton Wanderers have finalized the acquisition of Portuguese midfielder Ruben Rodrigues on a free transfer. The 29-year-old recently concluded his stint in Brazil and has signed an 18-month deal with the club, featuring an option for an additional year.
Wanderers’ January Signings
Rodrigues marks the sixth addition to Bolton’s squad during the January transfer window. He joins fellow new signings:
- Lewis Temple
- Jack Bonham
- David Harrington
- Corey Blackett-Taylor
- Rob Apter
However, Rodrigues will not be part of the team for their upcoming match against Wimbledon, as the transfer was not completed in time for him to travel to London.
Previous Experience and Impact
Rodrigues began his career in the Netherlands with Den Bosch. He achieved notable success at Notts County, where he scored 51 goals across 127 appearances. His contributions were crucial in helping Oxford United gain promotion to the Championship, where he played in the 2024 play-off final against Bolton, along with recording 13 goals and nine assists over 95 matches.
Return to England
After a summer transfer to Brazilian Serie A side EC Vitória, Rodrigues struggled to adapt and sought to return to Europe. He expressed enthusiasm for rejoining English football, stating, “Bolton is a massive club… I have unfinished business here. I am determined to play Championship football with this club next year.”
Expectations from the New Signing
Manager Steven Schumacher has been actively searching for a player to enhance the number 10 position this season. Multiple players including John McAtee and Kyle Dempsey have played in that role without consistency.
Schumacher expressed high hopes for Rodrigues, indicating, “Ruben is a player we have admired for some time. He has the technical ability to unlock defences and the experience of winning promotion from this league.” The manager believes Rodrigues will add a valuable dynamic to the team’s attacking capabilities.
With the anticipation surrounding his arrival, Rodrigues is set to wear the number 27 shirt as he begins this new chapter in his career at Bolton Wanderers.
