AI Kitchen Tracker Empowers Older Adults: SURF Student Innovation
In a groundbreaking initiative, a project aimed at empowering older adults has emerged from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). This innovative endeavor, known as the AI Kitchen Tracker, is part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship (SURA) program.

The AI Kitchen Tracker was developed with the collaboration of undergraduate researchers, including a dedicated student named Tan. She has worked closely with Ph.D. and master’s students under the guidance of mentors Zackory Erickson and Pragathi Praveena from CMU’s Robotics Institute. The project commenced in summer 2024 and has progressed through various academic semesters.

Tan, originally from Singapore, highlighted the importance of this project. “There’s a large proportion of people over 65 in Singapore,” she noted, emphasizing the relevance of the AI Kitchen Tracker for her home country and many others.
The primary objective of the AI Kitchen Tracker is to enhance the independence of older adults by providing them with the tools for easier meal preparation and monitoring their nutritional needs.
Impact on Student Experience
Tan describes her experience at CMU as transformative. Through her involvement in this project, she gained hands-on knowledge of AI system development, learning how to create an app and effectively communicate her research findings. “It’s been incredibly meaningful,” she remarked.
Community Engagement at CMU
Apart from her research, Tan has actively engaged in community life at CMU. She co-founded the CMU Star Wars Club, where students gather to participate in lightsaber training and robotics projects, like constructing a BB-8 droid. “CMU is a place where, if you’re passionate about something, you’ll find others who share that passion,” she noted.
