Postal Delays Explained in Bedfordshire, Norfolk, Essex, and Cambridgeshire
The postal service in several regions, including Bedfordshire, Norfolk, Essex, and Cambridgeshire, is currently facing significant delays. The Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) has identified two primary reasons for these issues.
Reasons for Postal Delays
1. New Shift System
One significant factor is the introduction of a new shift system, known as optimized delivery. This system is being trialed in 38 sorting offices nationwide, including areas such as Milton Keynes, Southend, and Ipswich. Under this system, second class mail is being delivered on alternate weekdays following a two-week rotating schedule.
2. Staffing Challenges
Mark Harper, the CWU’s regional officer for the East and the Midlands, expressed concerns over the strain this system places on postal workers. He noted that the union disagrees with the optimised delivery approach, stating, “It’s putting too much strain on our people and it’s clearly not working.”
Furthermore, an overtime ban at various depots has resulted in inadequate replacements when staff are sick. Harper explained that postal workers are eager to complete their deliveries in one day but face obstacles due to staffing shortages and the new delivery system.
Impact of Declining Letter Volumes
Another driving factor behind the postal delays is the decline in letter volumes. Royal Mail has reported a drastic reduction, with volumes dropping from 20 billion letters annually a decade ago to just 6.7 billion today. This decline complicates the operational strategy of the postal service.
