Warriors’ Steve Kerr Clarifies Comments on Kristaps Porzingis’ Illness
Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, recently clarified his comments regarding Kristaps Porzingis’ illness, addressing the concerns surrounding his health condition. During a radio interview, Kerr mistakenly referred to Porzingis’ diagnosis of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) as “misinformation.”
Context of Porzingis’ Illness
Porzingis has faced challenges due to POTS, a condition affecting the nervous system and causing significant fluctuations in heart rate. This illness has impacted the 7-foot-2 center’s career, with a diagnosis reported last year.
As of Saturday, he was ruled out of the game against the Los Angeles Lakers, marking his third consecutive absence. Prior to the game, Kerr indicated that Porzingis was dealing with a contagious illness, resulting in substantial fluid loss.
Kerr’s Incorrect Statement
- Kerr initially stated that Porzingis’ condition was unrelated to POTS.
- He referenced comments from Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh, claiming Porzingis does not actually suffer from POTS.
Kerr expressed regret over his remarks, acknowledging the error as a “stupid mistake.” He admitted that discussing Porzingis’ health was beyond his expertise and vowed to defer such issues to medical professionals.
Porzingis’ Health Progress
As for Porzingis’ performance, he has only played 17 minutes in a single game since joining the Warriors and was limited to 42 games last season with the Boston Celtics due to his health issues. After his recent practice session, Kerr noted that Porzingis was feeling better but did not confirm his availability for the next matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Moving forward, Kerr stated that the team would continue to monitor Porzingis’ condition closely.
