Smiling Friends Ending After Season 3: Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack Say Goodbye on Their Own Terms — Final Two Episodes April 12

Smiling Friends Ending After Season 3: Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack Say Goodbye on Their Own Terms — Final Two Episodes April 12
Smiling Friends

Adult Swim's most beloved animated comedy of the modern era is coming to an end — and the internet has been inconsolable since the announcement dropped Wednesday, February 26, 2026. Smiling Friends creators Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack confirmed the series will not continue past Season 3, voluntarily walking away despite Adult Swim having already renewed the show for Seasons 4 and 5. Two final episodes — described as "little stragglers" — air April 12 on Adult Swim.

This Is Not a Bit: Hadel and Cusack Make the Announcement Official

In a direct audio message posted to Adult Swim's official X account on February 26, Hadel opened with zero ambiguity: "I'm gonna cut right to the chase. This is not a bit, this is not a joke. Michael and I are here to announce that Smiling Friends will be ending after Season 3 is done." Cusack added: "To be perfectly honest, after we finished Season 3, Zach and I just both had the same feeling where we felt pretty burnt out after putting years and years into this, but also pretty accomplished. We just came to this feeling where we were like, 'I think that could just be it.'"

Hadel explained that from the very beginning he and Cusack wanted to put 110% into Smiling Friends and then "go out on top," saying it was better to leave the audience wanting more than to have fans think the show had overstayed its welcome. "We wouldn't want to be doing more seasons half-hearted or burnt out or not feeling it. That's not fair to us, and it's not fair to the audience to give you guys slop."

Season 4 and 5 Were Already Greenlit — The Creators Said No Anyway

Adult Swim had already renewed Smiling Friends for Seasons 4 and 5 before Season 3 premiered. Cusack confirmed the ending was entirely their own decision. "This was our decision," he said. When they told Adult Swim, the network's response was straightforward: "If you're not feeling like making a cartoon, we're not going to stop you. Go have a break. Either come back or don't."

Cusack described his vision for the show's legacy using a striking comparison: "The Beatles are so cool. They ended with Abbey Road on a peak, and it's like this nice little discography you can go back to watch. Leaving the audience wanting more is the best." He added that if he and Hadel made another show after Smiling Friends, it would function like a reset — comparing it to Paul McCartney's Wings as a way to start fresh rather than dilute what already existed.

Two Final Episodes Air April 12 on Adult Swim — Not a Finale, Just "Stragglers"

Adult Swim confirmed the release date for the series' final episodes: two unreleased Smiling Friends Season 3 episodes premiere April 12 at 11 p.m. on Adult Swim. The episodes are part of the ten-episode third season production batch but were not included in the initial rollout when Season 3 premiered in October 2025.

Hadel was direct about managing expectations: these are "little stragglers, little rogue planets out there, not thematically related" and were not conceived as a series finale. Fans should not expect a grand goodbye — these are simply two standalone adventures for Pim, Charlie, Flint, and the gang that happen to be the last ones ever made. All existing episodes of Smiling Friends Seasons 1 through 3 are available to stream on Max right now.

Adult Swim's Statement: "We Are Sad to See This Series Come to an End"

Adult Swim issued a full statement in response to the announcement: "Everyone at Adult Swim is incredibly proud of what Michael and Zach built and grateful for the bold, boundary-pushing vision behind Smiling Friends. Adult Swim has always been a creator-driven network, and Smiling Friends simply wouldn't exist without the singular vision and ambitious creativity of its co-creators. Like fans, we are sad to see this series come to an end. However, we fully respect and support Michael and Zach's decision, and we look forward to the possibility of collaborating with them on future projects."

What Comes Next: ZAM Studios Is Already Operational

Hadel and Cusack are not disappearing from animation. The duo and producer Aron Fromm have launched ZAM Studios, a new Los Angeles-based independent animation studio. Hadel and Cusack are choosing to build something new rather than grind out additional seasons of a show they feel they have already completed. The door remains open for future Smiling Friends specials or one-offs if strong ideas emerge — but no regular seasons are planned. For now, the smiles stop on April 12. And the entire animation community will be watching.
