Mass Shooting on Sixth Street Leaves 3 Dead, 14 Injured in Downtown Austin
AUSTIN, Texas — A night out in one of Austin’s busiest entertainment districts turned into tragedy early Saturday when a gunman opened fire near Buford's Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street, killing three people — including the suspect — and wounding 14 others, authorities said.
The shooting unfolded just before 2 a.m. in the heart of downtown’s nightlife corridor, an area packed with patrons visiting bars and live music venues. Officers with the Austin Police Department responded within minutes after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire.
Rapid Police Response
Police Chief officials said officers encountered the suspect shortly after arriving and engaged him in a brief exchange of gunfire. The shooter was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed two civilians were killed in the attack, and 14 others were transported to area hospitals, several in critical condition.
The Austin-Travis County EMS described the scene as chaotic but credited the heavy law enforcement presence in the district for enabling a swift medical response.
“This is a traumatic moment for our city,” city officials said during a morning press conference, offering condolences to victims and their families.
Suspect Identified; Terrorism Link Under Investigation
Law enforcement sources identified the suspect as Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen. Investigators say evidence recovered at the scene prompted authorities to involve the Federal Bureau of Investigation, including its Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Officials stressed that while a potential nexus to terrorism is being examined, no definitive motive has yet been confirmed.
“We are thoroughly investigating all possible angles,” authorities said, cautioning against speculation as the case develops.
A Busy Entertainment Hub Shaken
West Sixth Street — often referred to as “Dirty Sixth” — is a well-known nightlife destination in Austin, drawing college students, tourists, and residents alike. The area is typically heavily patrolled on weekends.
By daylight Saturday, police tape stretched across several blocks as detectives collected evidence and business owners assessed damage. Additional patrols were deployed throughout downtown to reassure the public.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims pending family notification. Counselors and victim assistance resources are being made available to those affected.
The incident marks one of the deadliest shootings in Austin’s entertainment district in recent years and adds to a growing national debate over public safety in nightlife areas.
