Calgary Launches Incentive Program for Backyard Suite Construction
Calgary has launched a new initiative aimed at enhancing urban living through backyard suite construction. The Backyard Suites Incentive Program offers substantial financial support for homeowners looking to build these housing units.
Program Details
Effective from March 2, the program provides up to $15,000 to assist in the construction of backyard suites. Additionally, homeowners can receive up to 40 percent of the costs for underground services, with a maximum of $20,000 available. This initiative is part of Calgary’s effort to increase affordable housing options and maximize the use of existing properties.
Eligibility Criteria
- Homeowners with heritage properties
- Those requiring accessibility features
- Properties that comply with existing land use by-laws
Impact of the Program
Currently, there are about 400 backyard suites in Calgary. This new program aims to significantly increase that number over the coming years. Josh Howes, the program manager, noted a surge in interest over recent years. He highlighted that many families are choosing to create additional living spaces to accommodate multi-generational living.
Community Benefits
The benefits of backyard suites extend beyond financial support. For families like the Chengs, who built a 900 square-foot suite for their relatives, these spaces represent an opportunity for closer family connections. Jia Cheng, a Calgary resident, explains the importance of keeping family close, especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program is expected to encourage widespread adoption of backyard suites, providing families with more options for housing without relocating. Local builders, such as Garage Suites Calgary, are optimistic that this initiative will lead to a significant increase in the construction of these units.
