Iowa State Redefines Women’s Sports Program

Ames, Iowa – The Iowa State University (ISU) Athletics Department is set to discontinue its women’s gymnastics program. This decision aims to replace it with another sport that provides equal or enhanced participation opportunities for women. Jamie Pollard, the Endowed ISU Director of Athletics, announced this change on [insert announcement date].

Iowa State’s Commitment to Current Gymnasts

ISU will honor scholarship commitments for current gymnasts who choose to stay at the university to complete their degrees. These student-athletes will retain access to various departmental services throughout their undergraduate careers.

Cancellation of the Gymnastics Season

The gymnastics season for 2025-26 was canceled after just four competitions due to a series of complex internal conflicts. These issues involved differences among teammates, coaching staff, and parents, which made it impossible for the team to continue competing or practicing. The suspension of the season was deemed the only feasible solution after thorough discussions with all parties involved.

Options for Impacted Student-Athletes

The current gymnastics team members will have several options:

  • Remain at ISU to complete their degrees with scholarships honored.
  • Transfer to other universities to continue their gymnastics careers.

The athletics department will also collaborate with the NCAA to facilitate waivers for these athletes, allowing them an additional year of competition due to the cancellation of the season.

Support Services for Student-Athletes

Impacted student-athletes will continue to have access to various support services, including:

  • Medical & Athletic Training: Full access to athletic trainers and rehabilitation services.
  • Mental Health & Counseling: Confidential mental health support through the athletics department.
  • Academic Support: Availability of tutoring, advising, learning specialists, and study halls.
  • Student-Athlete Development: Life-skills programming, career services, and leadership development opportunities.

Future of the Women’s Sports Program at Iowa State

Incoming recruits for the academic year 2026-27 will have their scholarships honored as well. However, gymnastics coaches have been informed that their employment agreements will not be renewed.

History and Future Plans

The women’s gymnastics program was established in the 1973-74 season and has won four conference championships, with the last title clinched in 2006. In terms of historical context, ISU has previously discontinued four men’s sports programs since 1994, including men’s gymnastics and men’s tennis.

The ISU Athletics Department will spend the upcoming months researching which women’s sport will be added next. Their goal is to ensure meaningful participation and scholarship opportunities for prospective students at Iowa State.
