Pete Docter Discusses Cutting Queer ‘Elio’ Plot for Broader Appeal
Pete Docter, the Chief Creative Officer at Pixar, has discussed the studio’s recent decision to remove a significant storyline from the film Elio. This change was made to broaden the film’s appeal to audiences, particularly parents who may be hesitant about certain topics.
Reason Behind the Cut in Elio
Initially, Elio included a plot point based on original director Adrian Molina’s experiences growing up gay. However, Docter explained in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that some parents expressed discomfort with content involving LGBTQ+ themes. He emphasized the studio’s commitment to creating films that resonate broadly, stating, “We’re making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy.”
Film Overview and Direction Changes
Elio follows the journey of an 11-year-old boy who develops unexpected relationships with extraterrestrials. Following its initial concept, the project underwent leadership changes, with Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian taking the directing reins. The film’s early drafts featured a scene where Elio is depicted parenting with a male partner, but this was ultimately omitted.
Pixar’s Shifting Focus
Traditionally known for original storytelling, Pixar is shifting towards projects that have sequel potential and more universally appealing narratives. Docter’s approach reflects a move away from director-driven stories, focusing instead on themes that are easily relatable for a broader audience. He pointed out that appealing to all demographics is crucial for the studio’s continued success under Disney’s umbrella.
Future Prospects for Pixar
- Toy Story 5 is scheduled for release this summer.
- Sequels for The Incredibles and Monsters, Inc. are in development.
- Docter emphasizes the importance of quality, stating, “If we’re going to just crank crap out, let’s shut the doors.”
Pixar’s film Hoppers, directed by Daniel Chong, is currently showing in theaters, showcasing the studio’s dedication to producing engaging and innovative content.
