Norovirus Sickens Over 150 on Princess Cruise Ship

A recent norovirus outbreak has impacted over 150 individuals aboard the Princess cruise ship, Star Princess, while it sailed through the Caribbean. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 104 guests and 49 crew members exhibited symptoms of gastrointestinal illness during the voyage.

Details of the Outbreak

The Star Princess embarked on its journey from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on March 7, with a scheduled return on March 14. The ship accommodated 4,307 guests alongside a crew of 1,561 members, as noted by the CDC.

  • Date of Departure: March 7
  • Scheduled Return: March 14
  • Total Passengers: 4,307 guests
  • Total Crew: 1,561 members
  • Illness Reported: 104 guests and 49 crew members

Course of the Voyage

During its eight-day cruise, the vessel made several stops including Honduras, Belize, and the Mexican Riviera. When the outbreak was confirmed, the ship was on its way from Belize City to Cozumel.

Symptoms and Response

Those affected predominantly experienced diarrhea and vomiting, common symptoms of norovirus, often referred to as the “stomach bug.” In reaction to the outbreak, Princess Cruises implemented its outbreak response plan, which involves enhanced cleaning and disinfection measures on board.

CDC’s Investigation

CDC officials stated that the crew collected stool samples from symptomatic passengers and crew members for testing. Sick individuals were isolated to prevent further spread of the virus. The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program is conducting an environmental assessment and outbreak investigation into this incident.

Context on Norovirus Outbreaks

Norovirus outbreaks are not uncommon in the cruise industry, predominantly affecting major cruise lines. Earlier this year, the CDC reported a separate outbreak on a Holland America ship that affected over 80 individuals shortly after departing from Fort Lauderdale. In another incident in February, 27 guests were reported ill aboard the luxury cruise ship Regent Seven Seas, which was traveling from Miami to Honolulu.

As the investigation unfolds, Princess Cruises has yet to comment publicly regarding the outbreak. The focus remains on managing the current situation and ensuring the health and safety of all passengers and crew members on board.
