Zoox Expands Reach to Marina, North Beach, and Chinatown
Zoox is significantly expanding its service area in San Francisco. The company is now operational in several key neighborhoods, including Marina, North Beach, Chinatown, Pacific Heights, and the Embarcadero. This expansion marks a critical phase for the Amazon-owned robotaxi service.
Limited Availability for Riders
Initially, the expanded service area will be accessible only to Zoox employees and their immediate connections. The company plans to include riders from its waitlist in the near future. This strategic decision allows Zoox to gather valuable feedback from early users before a wider rollout.
Focus on High-Volume Areas
Zoox aims to concentrate its services in districts with high ride-hailing demand before moving to more residential areas. The company began inviting waitlist participants for free rides late last year, starting in select neighborhoods, including SoMa, the Mission, and the Design District.
Progress and Future Plans
Based in Foster City, California, Zoox is also expanding its operations beyond San Francisco. The company is testing its purpose-built autonomous vehicles in markets such as Las Vegas, Austin, and Miami.
Significant Achievements
- Nearly 2 million autonomous miles driven since launching in Las Vegas in September.
- More than 350,000 riders have used the service within its limited areas around the Las Vegas strip and San Francisco.
In comparison, Waymo has consistently recorded more than 1 million autonomous rides each month since spring of last year. CEO Aicha Evans expressed excitement about the current growth phase, stating, “This expansion marks a significant step forward for Zoox and is driven by the insights from our early deployments.”
