U.S. Postal Service Implements Temporary Price Change for Transportation

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has announced a temporary price change aimed at aligning its transportation costs with market conditions. This adjustment is designed to ensure USPS can cover its operational expenses, as mandated by Congress.

Details of the Temporary Price Adjustment

Approved by the Postal Service’s Board of Governors on March 24, the increase will be 8 percent for several competitive domestic products. These include:

  • Priority Mail Express
  • Priority Mail
  • USPS Ground Advantage
  • Parcel Select

First-Class Stamps and other services will not be impacted by this change. The adjustment is set to take effect at midnight Central Time on April 26, and it will remain in place until midnight Central Time on January 17, 2027.

Context for the Price Change

This temporary increase is viewed as a necessary step to support a sustainable financial model for the Postal Service. As transportation costs have risen, competitors have introduced various surcharges. In contrast, USPS aims to avoid such surcharges, with this price increase being significantly lower than the fuel charges imposed by competitors.

The price change reflects standard practices within the industry and is intended to reinforce USPS’s commitment to its public service mission. This includes maintaining a nationwide delivery network for mail and packages at least six days a week.

Future Considerations

Following the effective period of this temporary price adjustment, the USPS will evaluate whether a permanent pricing mechanism is needed, depending on market conditions and transportation costs. The Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) will conduct a review of the proposed changes before they are implemented.
