NFL Urges Halt to Manipulable Prediction Market Trading

The NFL has taken a decisive stance against insider trading in prediction markets. The league has urged operators like Kalshi and Polymarket to halt specific trades that the NFL believes are too susceptible to manipulation. These markets include wagers related to announcer comments, celebrity attendance, draft picks, player signings, coach firings, officiating calls, injuries, and fan safety.

NFL’s Concerns Over Prediction Markets

The NFL expressed that certain wagers can be easily manipulated or predetermined, potentially leading to unfair allegations against players and staff. NFL executive vice president Jeff Miller emphasized the league’s intention to distance itself from inside information that could impact these markets. “Some people are going to have that information… that they can then share,” he noted in a conversation with ESPN.

  • Specific markets in question include:
    • Announcer comments
    • Celebrity appearances
    • Player signings
    • Coach firings
    • Officiating calls
    • Injuries
    • Fan safety
  • Kalshi has seen significant trading activity in these markets, with millions of dollars exchanged.

Collaboration with Regulatory Bodies

The NFL’s actions come after prolonged discussions with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which regulates prediction markets. Although there is no formal agreement, the CFTC values input from the NFL regarding potential market manipulations. Meanwhile, Major League Baseball (MLB) has already established a partnership with the CFTC to monitor such markets.

Polymarket has expressed openness to collaborate with various leagues to safeguard the integrity of games and enhance the fan experience. Kalshi, however, refrained from commenting on the situation.

Legislative Developments

New legislative efforts are underway to curtail prediction markets, including a bipartisan Senate bill that seeks to prevent these platforms from allowing betting on sports and casino-type games. State regulators have also initiated legal proceedings against prediction market companies, alleging that they engage in illegal gambling practices.

While the NFL has yet to state its position on this recent legislation, Miller highlighted the league’s desire for stronger safeguards before forming partnerships with prediction market operators. “We want to ensure that whatever is being done in this space, we can do our best to protect the integrity of the sport,” he stated.

In addition to MLB, other sports organizations like the NHL, UFC, and MLS have established collaborations with prediction market operators, indicating a growing trend in the sports industry.
