Big Sur Station Owner Explains Why Gas Prices Remain at $10 a Gallon
In Big Sur, Gorda by the Sea stands as the sole gas station for miles, charging $9.99 per gallon. Leo Flores, the owner, has explained that this price reflects certain operational realities. The digital pump cannot display prices beyond $10 due to software limitations.
Reasons Behind High Gas Prices in Big Sur
Flores reiterated that he is not aiming to exploit customers. Instead, he is navigating financial challenges that threaten his business. Fuel prices across the United States have surged recently, affecting many local economies. In particular, rising tensions involving oil-producing countries have contributed to this increase.
Operational Costs
The cost of running Gorda by the Sea goes beyond fuel prices. Flores operates the station and nearby facilities using generators that consume significant gasoline. He explained, “The generators run on five to six gallons of gasoline every hour.” This unique reliance on generators stems from the community’s lack of access to an external power grid.
Community Impact
- Flores owns the adjacent mini-market, café, hotel, and cabins.
- Without consistent gasoline deliveries, the entire hamlet struggles to function.
- In the 2023 landslide incidents, Highway 1 was closed for three years, significantly reducing business.
During that shutdown, Flores mentioned that his business operated at only 10% to 20% of normal capacity. He expressed concern that if the highway were to close again, his operations would be severely impacted. “If the highway is closed in both directions, I’m screwed,” he stated.
Comparative Fuel Prices
As of now, the national average for a gallon of regular gas is $4.09. In California, it rises to approximately $5.86, and within Los Angeles County, it can exceed $6. Unfortunately, customers in Gorda by the Sea face even higher prices due to the unique challenges of the location.
Future Considerations
Flores has contemplated installing solar panels to generate electricity. However, the high initial investment poses a barrier. Furthermore, upgrading gas pumps to allow higher pricing is currently unfeasible due to financial constraints.
While customers often express disbelief at the gas prices, Flores hopes that by understanding the underlying factors, they will be more accepting of the costs. “When I explain why to people, they’re happy to pay what I ask them,” he noted, emphasizing the need for awareness about the locality’s challenges.
