Cork City bar Brick Lane to close after 11 years

cork city is set to lose a long-running nightlife venue this week, with Brick Lane on South Main Street confirming it will close after service on Wednesday, April 8. The Cork City bar said the decision comes after 11 years in operation, as running costs have continued to rise and “the sums don’t stack up” anymore. Management said the closure is being made with “a heavy heart, ” and one final quiz night will go ahead before the doors shut for good.

Final night on South Main Street

Brick Lane said it will remain open every day, including Wednesday, so customers can call in to say goodbye. The venue first opened in the summer of 2015 and became known for food, drink and cocktails in a quirky setting, along with live sport and lively quiz nights.

The Cork City bar survived the pandemic, but management said the pressure of the cost of living crisis has now made the business unsustainable. In its statement, the venue thanked customers for an “amazing” journey and said the memories will live on even as trading comes to an end.

What the venue said

, management said: “It’s with a heavy heart that we have to tell you we are closing our doors after service on Wednesday, the 8th of April. We will have 1 last quiz night. ” The statement added: “It’s been an amazing almost 11 years trading. Some very hard times, but also some very good times. We have made friends and memories that will forever live on. ”

The venue also thanked “the hundreds of people who have worked alongside us” and “the thousands of customers, ” along with suppliers, bands, musicians, DJs and the quizmaster. It said: “Unfortunately, the sums don’t stack up any more, but the memories will live on. ”

Reaction from customers

Customers responded with shock and disappointment after the announcement. One wrote: “Oh the memories…. Sad to hear this but best of luck going forward. ” Another said: “That’s heartbreaking. Brick was our go to for Cocktails and giggles. The best Spicy Margs in Ireland. So truly sorry to hear this. ” A third added: “Sorry to hear this! Always a great bar with exceptional food! Ye will be missed. ”

For Cork City, the closure removes another familiar name from the city centre nightlife scene, and it leaves Brick Lane with just one last night of trading before Wednesday. The Cork City bar’s final quiz night now stands as the last planned event before the venue closes its doors after 11 years.
