Rivian R2 Debuts with Impressive 335-Mile Range

Rivian is set to launch its new R2 SUVs, marking a significant step into the mainstream electric vehicle market. Building on the excitement generated by the R1S and R1T models, the midsize R2 is expected to start deliveries soon. This model aims to cater to a broader audience, offering an impressive range and advanced specifications.

Rivian R2 Pricing and Availability

The R2 will debut with two trims. The R2 Performance will have a starting price of $57,990, while the R2 Premium is priced at $53,990 and is scheduled for release in late 2026. The R2’s battery capacity is set at 87.9 kWh, providing ample power for eco-conscious drivers.

Impressive Range for the R2

Initial estimates suggested the R2 would achieve a range of at least 330 miles (531 km) with its 21-inch tires. However, recent leaks from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) indicate a higher official range. Fitted with 21-inch wheels and performance specifications, the R2 is expected to achieve an official EPA range of 335 miles (539 km).

Impact of Wheel Size on Range

Range estimates vary significantly with wheel size. The R2 equipped with 20-inch wheels drops to an EPA range of 314 miles (505 km), primarily due to knobby all-terrain tires that increase drag. Future trims may provide additional range data, especially with all-purpose tires.

Charging Specifications and Features

The Rivian R2 is engineered for efficient charging. Key specifications include:

  • Battery Pack Capacity: 86.8 kWh
  • DC Fast Charging Rate: 210 kW
  • Level 2 AC Charging Rate: 11.5 kW

Additionally, the new R2 features an enhanced heat pump, improving performance compared to previous models.

As Rivian rolls out the R2, it plans to introduce more trims and configurations. The upcoming $45,000 version with a smaller battery is set to launch in late 2027, further expanding Rivian’s offerings in the electric SUV segment.
