Delta Air Raises Checked Baggage Fees Amid Rising Jet Fuel Costs

Delta Air Lines announced an increase in checked baggage fees for domestic and select short-haul international routes. This change aims to counteract the rising jet fuel costs stemming from ongoing tensions in the Middle East. The new fees will take effect on bookings made on or after Wednesday.

Details of the Fee Increase

  • The first and second checked bag fees will rise by $10 each.
  • The fee for a third checked bag will increase by $50.
  • The new fees will be:
    • First checked bag: $45
    • Second checked bag: $55
    • Third checked bag: $200

Context of the Change

This marks Delta’s first adjustment to domestic baggage fees in two years. The airline’s decision follows similar increases by competitors like United Airlines and JetBlue Airways. All airlines are coping with significantly higher fuel prices that have severely impacted operational costs.

Fuel prices have surged dramatically due to disturbances in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for oil. Recent data from the International Air Transport Association indicates that global jet fuel prices have jumped from an average of $85 to $90 per barrel earlier in the year to approximately $209 per barrel.

Delta’s Unique Position

Unlike some competitors, Delta has a refinery in Pennsylvania with a capacity of about 190,000 barrels per day. This facility supplies nearly 75% of the airline’s fuel requirements. However, Delta still faces the risk of fluctuating crude oil prices affecting its operational costs.

Other Considerations

Despite these changes, benefits related to Delta’s frequent-flyer programs, premium fares, and co-branded credit cards will remain unaffected. Additionally, there will be no alterations to baggage fees for long-haul international routes.
