Survey: 20% of U.S. Workers Embrace AI for Job Tasks
A recent survey has revealed that 20% of American full-time workers acknowledge that artificial intelligence (AI) has assumed some responsibilities in their jobs. Conducted by Ipsos in collaboration with Epoch AI, the research surveyed 2,000 adults about their use of AI in both personal and professional contexts.
Key Findings from the Survey on AI Usage in the U.S.
- Half of American adults reported using AI in the previous week.
- 15% of full-time workers have undertaken new tasks that would not have been possible without AI.
- The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5%.
Caroline Falkman Olsson, a researcher at Epoch AI, emphasized the significance of the findings. “The results affirm the growing influence of AI in workplaces,” she stated. However, she noted the need for further research to ascertain the specific tasks being affected by AI.
Usage Patterns and Trends
The survey, conducted from March 3 to 5, indicates that nearly 50% of respondents utilized AI between two to five days in the past week. Interestingly, only 1 to 2 tasks were performed by 62.5% of users on their busiest AI days.
- 6% of survey participants reported heavy AI usage.
Furthermore, Nicholas Miailhe, an AI policy expert, remarked on the implications of the survey. “When 1 in 5 workers indicate AI is replacing part of their job, it signals potential changes in the labor market,” he said.
AI Agents and Their Growing Influence
The survey also probed into the use of AI agents. While overall usage rates remain low, 8% of AI users indicated they engaged an autonomous AI agent in the past week. This contrasts sharply with the 49% who used AI systems for web searches, reflecting burgeoning interest in AI capabilities.
- Unique use of AI agents has risen in recent months.
- Only 50% of AI users utilized employer-provided AI services, instead opting for personal subscriptions.
Popular AI Services Utilized by Americans
Among the various AI services, the survey identified which tools were most frequently used:
| AI Service | Usage Percentage |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 31% |
| Google’s Gemini | 21% |
| Microsoft’s Copilot | 10.5% |
In addition to these statistics, analyst reports from Goldman Sachs noted that AI is accelerating job displacement, with about 16,000 jobs being lost monthly. The ability of AI to automate tasks representing 25% of total working hours highlights the urgency for policymakers to address this transition.
This survey presents crucial insights into how 20% of U.S. workers currently embrace AI in their job tasks, reflecting a significant trend that could reshape the labor landscape in the near future.
