Air New Zealand Introduces Bunk Beds for Economy Passengers on New Planes
Air New Zealand is set to revolutionize the travel experience for economy passengers by introducing bunk beds, known as Economy Skynest, on its upcoming Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flights. This innovative feature will allow travelers to truly stretch out and rest during their journey.

Bookings for these sleeping pods will commence on May 18, for select flights beginning in November. Each pod features six individual spaces designed like bunk beds, equipped with:
- A comfortable mattress and bedding
- A privacy curtain
- A seat belt for safety
- A reading light

- An amenity kit
Air New Zealand has assured that cabin crew will refresh the bedding, including pillows, sheets, and blankets, between each use. This initiative aligns with the airline’s commitment to enhancing passenger comfort on ultra-long-haul flights.

Nikhil Ravishankar, the Chief Executive of Air New Zealand, emphasized that the Economy Skynest pods provide customers with a chance to “stretch out, lie flat, and get a few hours’ proper rest in the air.” He added that this enhancement makes traveling to and from New Zealand more manageable for many.
Flight Experience and Pricing
The Economy Skynest will first be available on the long-haul route from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Auckland, New Zealand. This journey ranks among the longest flights globally, lasting around 17 hours.
For $495, passengers can reserve a bunks for a four-hour session. A representative from Air New Zealand noted that their research indicates a typical sleep cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes. This four-hour booking allows travelers to wind down, fall asleep, and wake up refreshed.
Additional Offerings and Competition
In addition to the Economy Skynest, Air New Zealand also currently offers the Sky Couch option. This unique feature allows three economy seats to convert into a flat surface, enabling passengers to stretch out. This development comes amid similar plans from United Airlines for a couch conversion of three seats, which has garnered mixed reactions.
