Air New Zealand Launches Skynest Bunk Beds in 2023

Air New Zealand is set to revolutionize long-haul travel with the introduction of its innovative Skynest bunk beds in economy class. This new offering will feature a pod containing six beds arranged three high on each side, accompanied by a central ladder for easy access.

Introducing Skynest Bunk Beds

The Skynest bunk beds are intended for use on select ultra-long-haul flights between John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Auckland Airport (AKL). Passengers will be able to reserve a four-hour block of time in the Skynest for approximately $495.

Comfort and Design Features

Each bunk measures 6 feet, 6 inches in length, allowing most travelers to lie flat. Additionally, the beds offer a shoulder width of around 25 inches, tapering at the feet. This design aims to provide comfort for all passengers, even those on the taller side.

The Skynest will come equipped with a comfortable mattress, fresh linens, a pillow, and a blanket. Additionally, travelers will receive a “Nestcessities” amenity kit, which includes skincare products, earplugs, an eye mask, and a dental kit.

Rules and Regulations

To ensure an enjoyable experience for all guests, certain rules will apply within the Skynest area. Passengers are expected to avoid eating, playing audio without headphones, or wearing shoes inside the bunks. The airline encourages travelers to use noise-canceling headphones or earplugs to enhance the napping experience.

Booking Details

Bookings for the Skynest bunk beds will open on May 18, 2026, with the inaugural flights expected to commence in November 2026. This offering is geared towards passengers aged 15 and older, whether flying in economy or premium economy.

Conclusion

Air New Zealand has been working on the Skynest concept for over six years, showcasing a prototype in New York City. With these innovative bunk beds, the airline is poised to transform long-distance travel and enhance passenger comfort.
