Snapchat Owner Snap Slashes 1,000 Jobs in Major Layoffs

Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, has announced significant layoffs, cutting 16% of its workforce, which amounts to approximately 1,000 positions. CEO Evan Spiegel described this decision as part of a crucial moment for the company as it navigates a path toward profitability.

Details of the Layoffs

The announcement came via a memo from Spiegel early Wednesday. He indicated that this staff reduction is expected to reduce Snap’s annual operating costs by over $500 million by the end of 2023. However, the layoff process will incur restructuring costs estimated between $95 million and $130 million.

Reasons Behind the Layoffs

Spiegel emphasized the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) as a key driver for the company’s future. He believes AI tools will enhance efficiency, allowing teams to produce and deliver products more rapidly.

AI and Efficiency Improvements

In the memo, Spiegel highlighted that about 65% of the new code produced by Snap had been generated using AI. This approach aims to streamline operations and reduce repetitive tasks across various projects, including:

  • Snapchat+
  • Improved ad platform performance
  • Efficiency upgrades within Snap Lite infrastructure

Financial Overview

Snap’s revenue for Q1 was reported at $1.529 billion, with an adjusted EBITDA of $233 million. The company plans to invest primarily in monetizable markets, enhance paid subscriptions for Snapchat+, and expand higher-margin advertising placements.

Support for Affected Employees

For employees affected by the layoffs, Snap is offering a support package that includes four months of severance pay, healthcare coverage, equity vesting, and career transition assistance. This support aims to ease the transition for those departing the company.

Spiegel acknowledged the difficulty of this decision and expressed gratitude for the contributions of departing team members. He reiterated the company’s commitment to moving forward with empathy and a focus on long-term goals, even amidst significant organizational changes.
