Sam Altman’s Orb Now Verifies Human Identity on Tinder
Sam Altman’s innovative project, World, has made significant strides in identity verification. The company recently introduced a feature that allows Tinder users worldwide to display a digital badge on their profiles. This badge signifies their verification as genuine humans, which involves an iris scan using World’s advanced technology.
The Global Expansion of Verification on Tinder
This announcement, made at a Lift Off event in San Francisco, follows a pilot program previously conducted in Japan. The new feature represents one of the most ambitious tests for World, aiming to see if consumers will adopt biometric verification for online interactions.
Background of World
- Founded in 2019 by Sam Altman and Alex Blania.
- Created to address challenges posed by advanced AI agents online.
- 18 million people verified as of 2023, up from 12 million.
World’s mission emerged from the need to distinguish human users from AI agents, especially as the influence of companies like OpenAI and Anthropic grows. Despite these challenges, the company has faced hurdles in achieving widespread acceptance. Authorities in various countries have scrutinized World for potential breaches of data protection laws.
Partnerships and Incentives
At the recent event, Tools for Humanity, the organization behind World, announced several partnerships. Users on Tinder who verify their identities through World can earn five free “boosts.” These boosts significantly increase their visibility on the platform, attracting more potential matches.
In addition to Tinder, other platforms are integrating World’s verification technology. Zoom users can now require identity verification before joining calls, enhancing security. Similarly, Docusign has announced that it will implement World’s identity checks for contract signing.
Future Developments
Tiago Sada, the Chief Product Officer at Tools for Humanity, highlighted the importance of forming partnerships with major platforms. The company is particularly focused on collaborations with social media networks to help users differentiate bots from real accounts. Additionally, Reddit has begun testing World technology for this purpose.
World is also set to launch a tool called Concert Kit. This feature allows artists to reserve tickets exclusively for verified individuals, tackling the issue of ticket scalping, particularly prevalent on sites like TicketMaster. Bruno Mars’ upcoming concert will test this feature, with a verified-humans-only performance scheduled for April 17, showcasing artists like Anderson .Paak.
Technological Innovations
Although no new hardware updates were announced, World first introduced its iris-scanning Orb in 2023. This device, combined with a mobile application, allows users to generate a unique cryptographic key, known as a World ID, after scanning their iris. This method provides a decentralized approach to online identity verification without requiring government IDs.
Initially branded as Worldcoin, the project has evolved to focus on identity verification in an AI-dominated landscape. While they still offer a cryptocurrency token as an incentive for sign-ups, the emphasis has shifted increasingly towards identity verification services.
