Lufthansa Reduces 20,000 Flights to Conserve Fuel During Iran War Crisis
The Lufthansa Group, a major German airline, has announced a significant reduction in flights as a response to the ongoing energy crisis linked to the Iran war. Starting immediately, the airline will eliminate 20,000 flights over the next six months. This decision aims to conserve jet fuel amid rising prices and declining energy supplies.
Lufthansa’s Flight Reductions
The airline will cancel its short-haul flights, prioritizing the removal of unprofitable routes from both Frankfurt and Munich. While cutting back in these locations, Lufthansa plans to expand routes from other hubs, including Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels.

Ryanair reported that its suppliers could only guarantee fuel through late May, while KLM is reducing 80 return flights to Amsterdam to mitigate costs.
This issue prompted discussions among European transportation ministers, who met recently to address the energy crisis. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the European commissioner for transport, emphasized the need to secure alternative fuel supplies, potentially from the United States, to manage the crisis effectively.
