Spirit Airlines shuts down 30 years of service — Letsbuyspirit

Spirit Airlines shut down operations effective immediately on Saturday, cancelling all flights and telling passengers not to head to the airport. The letsbuyspirit announcement leaves Canadian travelers who cross into the United States for cheaper fares with one fewer option, especially in Ontario and Quebec.

Dave Davis, Spirit’s president and chief executive officer, said the company had no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down. He said the decision followed mounting financial pressure and a sharp rise in fuel prices that left the carrier unable to secure additional funding.

Spirit Airlines and March 2026

Davis said Spirit reached an agreement with bondholders in March 2026 on a restructuring plan that would have allowed it to emerge as a go-forward business. The company instead moved to shut down after the recent fuel-price spike, reversing the path outlined in that plan.

In the shutdown notice, Davis said: "For more than 30 years, Spirit Airlines has played a pioneering role in making travel more accessible and bringing people together while driving affordability across the industry". He also said: "the sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the Company".

Ontario and Quebec travelers

The change is likely to be felt by some Canadian travelers who use U.S. airports such as Plattsburgh and Niagara Falls for cheaper fares. For those passengers, Spirit had been one of the low-cost cross-border choices, and its shutdown removes that option at the airport level right away.

Travelers with tickets on Spirit now have to rely on whatever refund process the carrier sets out as it winds down, while anyone planning to cross the border for a fare comparison will need to look at other carriers serving those U.S. airports. The immediate decision means the airline is no longer selling flights and is not operating a network for passengers to rebook through.
