Niantic Tests 3 Evergreen Weeks Paths in May — Timed Research Pokemon Go

Niantic is starting timed research pokemon go tests in May with a new Evergreen Weeks feature. The test adds branching research during non-event weeks, and the first one begins as Steeled Resolve ends on May 4th.

The feature gives players 3 different research paths: Exploration, Skill, or Battle. Niantic wants those quieter weeks to offer more than waiting for the next event, and the tasks can rotate so the rewards do not stay fixed from one week to the next.

May 5th and the first test

The first non-event week arrives on May 5th, which is when the test is expected to start. Niantic shared details with community ambassadors in Discord and Campfire, so the rollout is being previewed through player-facing channels rather than a broad public launch.

That timing leaves a gap between the 2026 edition of Steeled Resolve, which features Orthworm’s debut, and Lechonk Community Day on May 9th. The next weeklong event after that does not begin until Spring Marathon on May 12th.

Three paths in Pokemon Go

Players will pick from Exploration, Skill, or Battle during the test. The company says the research will not necessarily be the same week to week, and that means the bonus mix can shift between tasks instead of turning into a repeatable routine.

Players quoted in the discussion were not sold on the idea. One said, “Doesn’t sound like enough to really get me to play on non-event weeks” and another said, “If the spawns aren’t interesting then I simply don’t have any motivation to play.”

Steeled Resolve into Spring Marathon

The friction point is simple: Niantic is trying to make the quiet stretches matter, but some players want reruns of older events or the return of Spotlight Hour instead. Bonus Candy and XP can help, yet the reaction suggests that rewards alone may not be enough if the surrounding spawns stay flat.

For players, the practical watch point is whether the May test changes the weekly rhythm or just adds another menu of tasks. The unanswered question is how much the Evergreen Weeks rewards will vary from week to week once the test actually starts.
