Jim Jarvis Gets First MLB Call-Up After .308 Start at Gwinnett
jim jarvis got his first major league call-up Wednesday, with Atlanta selecting his contract from Triple-A Gwinnett and designating José Azócar for assignment in the corresponding move. The promotion gives the Braves another infield option after Jarvis opened the season with a.308/.415/.445 line over 153 plate appearances.
Jarvis Reaches Atlanta
The move sends Jarvis to the majors for the first time in his career. He spent the first five weeks of this season with Gwinnett, where he paired a.308 average with a 15% walk rate, a 17.6% strikeout rate, 15 steals in 17 tries, four home runs and six doubles.
Atlanta also gets a player who had already moved once inside the organization. After Detroit traded him to the Braves at last summer's deadline for Rafael Montero, Jarvis hit.265/.344/.361 over 21 games with Atlanta's Double-A affiliate before advancing to Triple-A.
Gwinnett Numbers
Jarvis was not just reaching base. He was putting together a steady season that included nearly 1200 professional late appearances, a.864 Triple-A number in 150 PA, and enough production to push him into the majors for the first time. Baseball America ranked him 28th in the Atlanta system over the offseason, and Brendan Gawlowski of FanGraphs listed him as an honorable mention in March.
The Braves have also been shifting personnel around him. Mauricio Dubón moved from shortstop to center field over the past week, Michael Harris II dealt with minor quad discomfort that kept him out of the field, and Mike Yastrzemski moved over to right field while Harris started in left field for the first time in his career.
Azócar Loses His Spot
Azócar is the roster casualty. He was brought up on Sunday as outfield depth when Ronald Acuña Jr. went down, then made one start in right field and went 0-for-2 before pinch running and stealing a base on Monday.
That leaves Atlanta with a short-term infield addition and a roster spot that can turn quickly. The Braves should get Ha-Seong Kim back from injury within the next week to 10 days, a return that would push Jorge Mateo back to a depth role alongside Kyle Farmer, while Azócar is out of minor league options and could be traded or placed on waivers within five days.
