Sony Leaves Ps6 Price and Release Date Undecided
Sony says ps6 timing and pricing are still undecided, even as the company weighs higher memory costs and a possible supply squeeze into FY 2027. For players, that means no launch target to plan around and no price floor to anchor expectations.
Hiroki Totoki on Ps6 timing
Hiroki Totoki, Sony president and CEO, said the company has not yet decided when it will release the PlayStation 6 or what it will cost.
"We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices" he said during Sony’s financial call through a translator.
He also said, "So we would like to really observe and follow the situation."
Memory prices and Sony costs
Totoki said increases in memory prices would raise the cost of the bill of materials and manufacturing, which puts pressure on the economics of the next console before Sony has even set a launch plan.
He added that Sony has acquired the necessary volume of materials for the rest of calendar year 2026 and has to a certain extent agreed on the price itself, but he said the company had not yet made an official decision on PS6 timing or price because the upcoming component situation is not yet clear.
"Looking at the current circumstances, the memory price is also expected to be very high FY 2027, because there will still be a shortage of supply. So under that assumption, we must think carefully what we will do," he said.
PS5 sales and analyst view
Sony sold about 1.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the three months ended March 31, and the lifetime total reached 93.7 million units.
The PS5 sold slightly less than the PS4 in the equivalent quarter, when PS4 sold 2.6 million units, while Sony said income should be flat year-on-year because of higher investment in the next-generation platform.
David Gibson, a senior analyst at MST Financial, said earlier this year that PlayStation 6 is not likely to release any time soon, and he said Sony expects the PS5’s lifecycle to be extended.
The one number still missing is the one buyers care about most: PS6 pricing, because Sony has not set it and has tied the decision to component costs that may stay elevated through FY 2027.
