Lewis Ferguson Open to Bologna Exit for Something Special
Lewis Ferguson is open to leaving Bologna this summer if the move offers “something special.” The 26-year-old midfielder said the idea of his immediate future is on his mind, even as he makes clear he is not pushing to go. His contract runs to 2028, with a further year option, so any exit would need to meet a high bar.
Ferguson and Bologna
Ferguson has built a strong position at Bologna after leaving Scottish football for Serie A, winning the Coppa Italia in 2025 and captaining I Rossoblù. He has also become a key figure for Scotland under Steve Clarke, which is why his comments carry more weight than a routine transfer thought. His words were direct: “It [his immediate future] does come into my thoughts, definitely.”
He linked that uncertainty to his playing time. “Just because I’ve been so used to playing,” Ferguson said. “This season I’ve been in and out — it would throw a wee bit of doubt into your head.” Last season, injury stalled his minutes for Bologna, and rotation has kept him in and out of the team again this year.
Future moves and interest
That is the friction point in his situation. Ferguson said, “If there was an opportunity out there…it’s not that I’m desperate to leave Bologna.” He added, “I love this place. I love the club. I’ve two years left,” before making the standard for a move clear: “All that said, to take me away from Bologna, it would need to be something special.”
He has not closed the door on a change because of the length of his career or the interest around him. “But I’ve always been open to things,” he said, and later added, “I’ve always said I’m open to hearing what’s out there.” Ferguson said, “It’s a short career and I want to experience as much as I can,” then summed up his position: “I’m probably still in that same position where I’m happy where I am, but I’m obviously open to opportunities.”
Napoli have been credited with interest in him over the years, while Juventus are long-term admirers. Ferguson was also once a Rangers target before he switched to Serie A. For Bologna, the contract through 2028 plus the extra year option gives them leverage; for clubs watching him, the price is not just money but a move he would regard as special enough to justify leaving a club he says he loves.
