Red Robin Will Close Frederick Location May 24 After 15 Years
Red Robin will close its Frederick restaurant on May 24, ending almost exactly fifteen years at 5582 Spectrum Drive in the Francis Scott Key Mall. The shutdown folds the location into a broader cost-cutting plan that has already pushed the chain toward about 70 underperforming closures.
May 30, 2011 was the opening date for the Frederick store, which made the timing unusually tight: almost exactly fifteen years later, the company is pulling the unit from the mall. For regular customers, gift cards will still be accepted at the nearby Germantown Red Robin in Montgomery County.
Francis Scott Key Mall Ends a Run
5582 Spectrum Drive has been the Frederick address for one of Red Robin’s better-known suburban outposts, with a menu built around gourmet burgers and Bottomless Steak Fries. The closing also leaves Frederick without a Red Robin location after the chain’s former site at Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg shut in 2014.
2014 now stands as the last time a local Red Robin disappeared from the region, and May 24 will do the same for Frederick. The company’s move removes a familiar dining stop from a mall that has hosted the restaurant since 2011, and customers who used the location for dine-in meals or gift card redemptions will need to shift to Germantown.
North Star Plan Targets 70 Stores
Approximately 70 locations were flagged for closure in late 2024 under Red Robin’s North Star plan, a cost-cutting initiative meant to improve profitability and bring customers back into stores. That broader restructuring is the mechanism behind Frederick’s closure, even as the chain says its traffic picture has improved.
First quarter of 2026 traffic results were the company’s strongest in three years, yet same-store sales still declined 0.6% year over year through April 19. Traffic fell 1.6% through April 19, a smaller drop than the 3.6% decline in the previous quarter, but not enough to keep every restaurant in the portfolio open.
May 24 leaves Frederick with a permanent deadline, not a pause. Customers who want to use Red Robin gift cards locally have one nearby option in Germantown, while the chain continues trimming weaker stores even as its traffic trend has started to improve.
