Frederica Wilson Announces 83-Year Retirement, Ends 5000 Role Models Push — Frederica Wilson Retirement Announcement

Rep. Frederica Wilson made her frederica wilson retirement announcement on Friday, saying she will not seek reelection after serving in Congress since 2011. The 83-year-old Democrat said it was time to leave Congress, closing a House career built around Florida’s 24th Congressional District.

Wilson said she held on as long as she did because of the 5000 Role Models program, which she created more than 30 years ago. In an interview with the Miami Herald, she said, "I think it’s time, and I think I really held on as long as I did because of the 5000 Role Models program, and my concern about the future of it,"

Florida’s 24th Congressional District

Wilson represents a heavily Democratic South Florida seat that includes parts of northern Miami-Dade County and southeastern Broward County. Her departure opens a district she has held since 2011, and it removes an incumbent from a seat where party control has been stable under her tenure.

Just days before the announcement, Wilson dismissed retirement reports as a crazy rumor. She later told the Miami Herald, "I figured if I announced that I was retiring, what would the Legislature and the governor do? What would they say? Would District 24 be an easy target because Frederica is no longer there? I’m a strong candidate,"

Wilson and Donald Trump

Wilson has been a frequent critic of President Donald Trump across both of his administrations, a posture that has defined part of her profile in Congress. In the same interview, she asked, "With me not here, would that weaken the survival of District 24?"

For voters in the district, the immediate consequence is simple: the seat will now be open instead of occupied by a long-serving incumbent. The next phase will be the scramble to hold a district Wilson described as politically vulnerable without her name on the ballot.
