Byd Zhengzhou Melbourne Arrival Delivers 4,810 EVs Ahead of Schedule
BYD's owned vessel Zhengzhou made the byd zhengzhou melbourne arrival at Port Melbourne over the weekend, docking ahead of schedule with 4,810 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on board. The shipment is already moving into the next stage of delivery, with Sydney and Brisbane scheduled to receive vehicles in the coming days.
BYD described the arrival as a "momentous occasion". The cargo includes BYD and DENZA models, and the Sealion 7 and Atto 2 account for more than 2,000 of the vehicles on board.
Hussein Dia on BYD demand
Hussein Dia, a professor at Swinburne University, said the shipment shows Australia’s EV market is maturing quickly and manufacturers are confident about long-term demand. "This shipment is quite significant because it shows how quickly the Australian EV market is maturing and how confident some manufacturers like BYD now appear about long-term demand in Australia," he said.
BYD has become one of Australia’s fastest-growing automotive brands. In April, it was Australia’s second-highest-selling car brand behind Toyota and delivered more than 7,700 vehicles.
Port Melbourne to Sydney
The cargo adds to BYD’s plan to deliver 30,000 vehicles to Australian customers in the coming months. It also comes as almost all new cars sold in Australia are imported by sea, which makes port arrivals part of the supply line rather than a side detail.
A small group of customers is expected at the port on Tuesday to witness the arrival of their vehicles. For buyers waiting on the shipment, the Melbourne docking means the cars are now in the domestic delivery chain, with Sydney and Brisbane next in line.
