West Byfleet Loses Last Branch as Lloyds Bank Closes Two Sites
lloyds bank will close two Surrey branches on Monday, including its West Byfleet site, leaving the town without any bank branches. The closures come from changes to the bank's network and hit customers who still rely on face-to-face banking.
West Byfleet and Staines
Two branches are set to shut: West Byfleet and Staines. For West Byfleet, the loss is sharper because it will no longer have any bank branches after the closure, a change that leaves residents and local businesses with fewer in-person options.
Will Forster, the Woking MP, raised concerns in March that the closure could leave West Byfleet without access to face-to-face services. He has called for a review into establishing a banking hub in West Byfleet, a proposal aimed at replacing some of the functions the branch has handled.
Norah Holder in West Byfleet
Norah Holder, 88, called the closure "diabolical". She said West Byfleet has many retirement developments and no Post Office, putting the loss of the branch into a daily reality for older residents who need somewhere nearby to handle money matters in person.
Ancy Fenton said banking was not just about apps for many people, especially small businesses and elderly residents. "Sometimes you need to go and speak to a real person," she said, putting the pressure on shops and older customers who may not want to manage every transaction through a phone.
Lloyds Bank and local access
Lloyds said customers wanted the freedom to bank in the way that worked for them and said it offered "more choice and ways to manage money than ever before". That is the bank's case for the network changes, even as the local effect in West Byfleet is a complete exit from branch banking.
Dennis Macco said it would be "brilliant" to make a banking hub work, while Cecilia Scott said older people really want to see somebody in person. The gap now is practical: West Byfleet businesses and residents lose the branch on Monday, and the next test is whether a hub can replace enough of that service to matter.
